Ebay Website Building Design Online

One of the key components of successfully selling goods on ebay is how attractive your online business pages look to potential bidders and buyers. Ebay itself gives you some basic layout and design features you can use to make your ebay listings more interesting, but if you don’t want to open a full ebay store just yet, you can still develop an identity for your ebay pages by learning some HTML and building your own listing pages.

As ebay is basically a specialised website, you can take control over how the main design of your ebay listings look. The space below the main auction detail area where bids are logged, is the item description where you can flex your website design muscles. Think of this space as a one page website or an electronic catalogue page your online business is using to showcase an item on ebay.

Building your Own Pages

Ebay itself has a brief overview of the HTML tags you can use to make the listings your online business designs more interesting and engaging. If you want to create a completely bespoke listings page, then you will need to learn more about the HTML language. Your auction page design can be built from scratch by simply hand coding a webpage that you can reuse for each item your online business lists on ebay.

You can also make use of the website design tools that are available. The market leader is Dreamweaver that you can buy as a standalone program, but is more cost effective when bought with the Adobe Creative Suite of applications. Using just your computer’s mouse you can create advanced web pages for your ebay listing with ease. It is, though, still a good idea to gain a basic understanding of how HTML works as you may need to tweak the actual HTML code when you cut and paste this into the ebay listings description field.

Using a Template

To save you time and effort many design companies now offer a selection of ready made templates you can buy. You simply load these into whichever website design program you are using to change images, links and the details of the item you want to sell on ebay. You could use multiple templates to identify different categories of goods you are selling.

Images and Graphics

Each of the items your online business wants to sell on ebay must have a photograph. Most ebay users want to see the item they are thinking of buying. Images you will use on the listing pages you have designed will need to be in JPEG format as this is the standard for image designed for a website.

Don’t forget to optimise your images so they download quickly. Don’t make your bidders wait longer than they have to in order to see the items you have for sale. Animated images can be used, but don’t go overboard with these. Flashing text can quickly become annoying and could make your potential bidder click away from your listings.

Design Checklist

Your ebay listing pages are your chance to make your online business standout from the crowd. Even with some small design changes to the standard ebay listing you’ll be surprised how effective good design can be. Use the guidelines below to help you design engaging listing pages for your ebay business:

Business Branding
Using HTML - especially a template with a complementary colour scheme - is a great way to brand your online business. You can include your logo and any additional information to give your bidder a real sense that they are dealing with a professional business.

Images and Graphics
As you are designing your own ebay pages you can take your time ensuring the images you use are pin sharp and really showcase the items you are selling. It is vitally important to optimise your images so they download quickly.

Description
The potential customers that will find your listings pages will base their buying decision on the information you provide them with. Your description should be concise yet comprehensive. You can also use images and graphics to explain any features you want to highlight. HTML can be used to make this text more interesting to view on the ebay page.

Contact Details and Links
Customers like to know that they can get in touch with the online business they are buying from. It’s important to make your contact details clear. Also, if you are including links to other website pages these links should be checked and double-checked to ensure they are working properly.

Payment Details
As an ebay business you will be using PayPal as your main payment mechanism. Visit the PayPal website as they have graphics and other material you can include on your ebay pages to show buyers they can bid on your items and pay with confidence.
